5 Things Friday

1) I totally fainted at the doctor’s office yesterday. I went in for a routine check up when, suddenly, they decided to draw blood. I ran early in the morning and didn’t eat much before the appointment, mistakes #1 and #2. I’d never had my blood drawn before, so I was surprised when they did it this time. Needless to say, I was dismissed by the nurse and headed into the lobby when I started to feel super dizzy. It was almost like I was riiiiiidiculously drunk and couldn’t get my bearings. I walked over to the water fountain to fill up a cup and sat down next to some dude on an ottoman. The next thing I knew I woke up in a sweat, not able to feel my arms or legs, with four doctors huddled around me.

I’m not sure how long I was out for, but I was totally confused when I woke up. Apparently, I turned ghostly white and passed out onto the lap of the dude next to me. Embarrasssssssing. It took me a minute to figure out what had happened, and a nurse was already on her way with some apple juice to get my blood sugar levels up. I immediately felt better after that, but they made me stick around for another 30 minutes and checked my vitals twice before letting me go. I had never fainted before, and let me tell you, I wouldn’t want to do it again…holy crap.

2) Wednesday night was the official start of FOOTBALL SEASON. Which, in my opinion, is the second best season of the year only slightly nudged out by that whole holiday season thing. It pretty much means that every Saturday and Sunday I will be attending or glued to my couch watching games all day. This year, I’ve joined not one, but TWO fantasy football leagues. I’m hoping to avenge my abysmal 2-11 record from last year.

I swear, I’m not a boy. I just like sports.

3) I don’t drink coffee all that often, and when I do I usually get a caffeine rush that gets my heart beating faster than the time I went skydiving. But I saw Wednesday’s Livingsocial deal for Starbucks and I couldn’t pass it up. Apparently pumpkin spice lattes are back for fall along with…salted caramel mochas? To my dear co-workers, I’m sorry in advance for I cannot be controlled with caffeine in my system.

4) I’ve realized recently that I’m so apathetic when it comes to politics. Like, I will inform myself enough to make an intelligent, educated voting decision come November, but all this extra bullshit? Not interested. My politically charged friends get so riled up about [it seems like] everything and I sort of wish that I could block anything on facebook that has to deal with politics from now until election day. Maybe it’s just me, but I seriously don’t care about your opinion on everything from birth control to which flavor of gum is best.

Why can’t we all just get along?

5) It was a short week and I loved it. On Tuesday I tweeted something about it being Monday. I promptly deleted it 3 hours later when I realized it was not actually Monday. Now, it feels like Thursday, but is actually Friday. Does it get better than that? I guess it does since I’m going back to my alma matar tomorrow for a football game. Bring on the weekend!!

Have you ever fainted? Do you like football? Do you care about politics?

‘Cause You Had a Bad Day…

Because you had a bad day, you’re taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around

Does anyone else get that Daniel Powter song stuck in their head when they’re having a bad day? I swear, I actually hear it on constant loop.

I didn’t just have a bad day, but rather an entire bad week which rolled with me right into the weekend.

I swear, I couldn’t catch a break! Everything that could possibly go awry, did. No joke. In the span of two days I got into a tiff with a friend, slept through my alarm, was late to work, electrocuted myself with a computer chord, felt sick and had a fever, broke the charging unit on my Kindle, hit massive amounts of traffic at inconvenient times, and busted a headlight in my car. Needless to say, I threw myself a mini-pity party and ended up crying on three separate occasions. Very rare for me, but sometimes it feels good to just let it out.

Today. Today, my friends, feels like a fresh start. New week, new attitude. Positivity is contagious. I’m going to try and focus on things that make me happy.

There’s no problem that this little guy’s face can’t cure:

Kyle had his first outing to my parent’s house last night for dinner. He was so well-behaved. He slept pretty much the entire time I was there, but my mom said that he was super alert and awake earlier in the day. He let everyone hold him and play with him without even fussing. Check him out with his Great Grammy! She said that she could just sit there and watch his face all day. He makes the funniest faces when he sleeps, kind of makes you wonder what he’s dreaming about. A big bottle in the sky?  Reminiscing about the good old days back in my sister’s belly? I don’t know, but I’m curious!

Other things that make me happy? Check out this deal on livingsocial:

You know I had to buy it. I sure do love my school, and I sure do love football! The game is their first of the season and is being played at FedEx Field, which is essentially in my backyard. Sign me up! I actually realized when I went to buy the tickets that I have not missed a season opening game since my graduation year.

2009 at UMD:

We almost won this game, but lost in overtime. 😦

2010 at Virginia Tech:

If you are a JMU Football fan, this game will go down as the biggest in history. It was cold, wet, raining, and we had absolutely no chance of beating Virginia Tech. Then, suddenly, by some kind of miracle, the rain stopped and our game started. We came from behind to beat Tech 21-16 in the final few minutes. It was beautiful, magical even. And I didn’t have a voice for a week.

2011 at UNC:

We got crushed. Also, after the lone touchdown we did score, our cheerleaders came out waving school flags and instead of spelling out JMU, they spelled out JUM. Embarrassing. But, visiting UNC and tailgating with my JMU friends was fun!

Can’t wait for this year.

Whoa, tangent. Back on track. Something else I am totally diggin’ right now:

This book. It was recommended to me by my boss at work, and I know a lot of people have been reading it lately. Holy guacamole! It has captivated my attention and I seriously cannot stop reading. I was up until after 2am the other night because I couldn’t put it down! There are so many plot twists, I feel like the author is playing mind games with me. I’m about 75% done and will likely finish the rest tonight. If you’re into mystery novels, I’d highly recommend this one.

I think that’s all for now. Here’s to hoping that this week is better than the last.

How do you turn around a bad day?

-ism’s

We all have “-ism’s”, as I like to call them. Those things about you that make you, you! I consider myself to be a quirky person. I’m not talking about the Zoey Deschanel kind of quirky, but more in the literal sense of the word: my personality has a lot of quirks in the form of weird habits, thoughts, and views on things. I like to call them Caitisms.

I try to let my personality shine through in most of my posts, but sometimes when talking about food, running, and whatnot, it can be difficult to show that. So, I figured what better way for you guys to get to know a bit more about me than to just list out random Caitisms.

25 Things You [Probably] Don’t Know About Me

1) I’ve woken up every single day this week with “Rack City” in my head. It’s a weird song to have stuck in your head first thing in the morning, but at the same time it kind of gets me amped up.

2) I generally hate talking on the phone. I find it to be SUPER awkward, just because you can’t see the person and their facial cues. I enjoy text messages though, which seems sort of backwards even to me.

3) I have a really, really good memory of faces, places, and events. If I meet you once, I will likely remember your name. I can also remember specifics of mostly any conversation I’ve had.

4) Crafting makes me happy. Sometimes I go a little overboard when someone approaches me about a possible craft project. For instance, I made this cool t-shirt for this weekend, so excited!

5) I’m a romantic, but I’m also a realist.

6) It makes me uncomfortable when someone I don’t know sits next to me in a movie theater, regardless of whether or not it’s crowded.

7) I hated high school with ever fiber of my being. It was the worst 4 years of my life and I’m so happy to be past that stage. Yet somehow, I managed to walk away with friends who I still see today!

8) I just discovered that I like oatmeal! As long as it has a big scoop of peanut butter in it.

9) I have lived in 4 different states: Pennsylvania, Washington, Virginia, and Maryland.

10) I genuinely like being a “real adult”, having a regular schedule, and regular working hours. I like my job and the company I work with, which I think is a big factor.

11) At the same time, I miss college. I ❤ JMU!

12) I am not typically attracted to men with super dark features (tall, dark, and handsome?). I think they look too similar to me!

13) Sometimes, I forget that I bought a particular clothing item and then find it in my closet months (or years!) later. It’s like shopping at home! That happened with the pants I’m wearing today:

14) I drink a TON of water. Probably 8-10 big cups (the picture below) a day. Still, I’m always dehydrated…

15) 3 years ago I thought running a half marathon was my greatest accomplishment in life. Now, I’ve run 2 full marathons and I’m relatively certain that even those aren’t my biggest accomplishments.

16) <— This is my lucky number!

17) I really like the band Fun. but I won’t tell anyone because I’m worried that’ll make me look like a hipster.

18) My favorite forms of humor are sarcasm and puns.

19) My co-workers call me Caitness and I like it because it sounds like Katniss (from the Hunger Games) and I secretly wish I was her!

20) I talk about my family too much. I’ve always wondered if that’s annoying? I can’t help it, they’re the coolest people I know.

21) My 21st birthday was on Thanksgiving. I spent it in Vegas!

22) I don’t feel heat in my mouth.  Seriously, I don’t feel it. I will drink an entire scalding hot coffee before you can take your first sip.

23) If I could, I’d eat FroYo everyday. I exclusively go for the chocolate flavors.

24) I’ve seen John Mayer 5 times in concert and I’m dying to go to another show. He’s so talented and my favorite live musician!

25) I have a double jointed thumb. See:

What are some of your -isms?

This weekend I…

I am notorious for always having jam-packed weekends. It’s true, I don’t like to be bored.

This weekend I:

…saw the Foo Fighters.

…enjoyed some beautiful fall weather.

…ate the most delicious burger and (sweet potato!) fries…

…and this fried oreo. Om nom nom!

…returned home.

…watched some JMU FOOTBALL!

…enjoyed the company of two awesome friends.

…took a trip down memory lane.

…reunited with my one true love.

…ran 10 miles.

…”learned” to change the oil in my car (let’s be honest, my dad changed the oil and I played with the power tools).

…enjoyed my FIRST peppermint mocha of the season!!!

Whew! What a successful weekend. I’m wiped.

Things I’m Digging: October

1) My North Face Jacket

Sometime last week while I was enjoying the summer-like weather in Hawaii, October and fall sprung up on the East Coast. This week, as temperatures plummeted, I finally got the chance to pull out my dusty, old North Face Jacket which is my most over-worn comfortable jacket of the winter months. I have missed it dearly during the hot, humid summer months and I’m so glad it’s finally made its triumphant return!

2) Chick-fil-a

(source)

If we’re being really specific here (which we are), I am technically referring to Chick-fil-a’s Spicy Chicken Sandwich (hold the pickle). I had one last week and I CAN’T STOP CRAVING IT! I would eat one everyday this week if I could, but I can’t, because that isn’t healthy…and isn’t that what this blog is all about? But hey, I had one for lunch therefore I’m 1 for 1 so far this week. 😀

3) Pumpkin Carving

My friends and I dabbled a bit in the art of pumpkin carving this season. I haven’t successfully carved a pumpkin since my sophomore year of college. In fact, last time I tried the whole thing collapsed in my hands and I just threw it in the trash. This year’s extravaganza was so much fun, made for some sweet pictures, AND got me in the Halloween/Fall spirit. See if you can guess which one is mine!

4) JMU Football Games

Have I mentioned that I seriously love my alma mater? In college I lived and breathed JMU football in the fall. Now that I’ve graduated not much has changed, other than the fact that I need to put a little more effort (rather than just getting out of bed) to actually attend games. There’s just something about heading down 81, pulling into the tiny town of Harrisonburg, and entering that [newly rennovated!] stadium that just pulls at my nostalgic heartstrings. It’s pretty helpful that most of my friends also have season tickets, so it’s never hard to find people to tailgate with!

5) Self-confidence

Because confidence is sexy, right? There are a few things in my life right now that are actually finally surprisingly working out as I hoped they would. This blog being one of them! It’s nice to find a voice and the ability to express myself through writing. The more I post, the easier I find words flowing from my fingertips. Not only has the blog helped me to feel more confident as a writer, but it has actually helped me feel more comfortable with trying new foods! So, thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who continues to support this venture. Whether it’s reading my posts, e-mailing me potential topics, encouraging me to try a new food/recipe, or just subscribing to increase my numbers, the love and support from my family and friends has been overwhelming and has helped me more than you realize.

So, with that: I will try to keep things spicy (and not just in chicken sandwich form) enough for you. On Wednesday, I will be taking my first dive into the wonderful, confusing, and to me, unknown world of cooking. Operation Chicken Florentine here I come.

…and for the record, I definitely had to google how to spell Florentine. I’m in so much trouble.
