5 Things Friday

1) I totally fainted at the doctor’s office yesterday. I went in for a routine check up when, suddenly, they decided to draw blood. I ran early in the morning and didn’t eat much before the appointment, mistakes #1 and #2. I’d never had my blood drawn before, so I was surprised when they did it this time. Needless to say, I was dismissed by the nurse and headed into the lobby when I started to feel super dizzy. It was almost like I was riiiiiidiculously drunk and couldn’t get my bearings. I walked over to the water fountain to fill up a cup and sat down next to some dude on an ottoman. The next thing I knew I woke up in a sweat, not able to feel my arms or legs, with four doctors huddled around me.

I’m not sure how long I was out for, but I was totally confused when I woke up. Apparently, I turned ghostly white and passed out onto the lap of the dude next to me. Embarrasssssssing. It took me a minute to figure out what had happened, and a nurse was already on her way with some apple juice to get my blood sugar levels up. I immediately felt better after that, but they made me stick around for another 30 minutes and checked my vitals twice before letting me go. I had never fainted before, and let me tell you, I wouldn’t want to do it again…holy crap.

2) Wednesday night was the official start of FOOTBALL SEASON. Which, in my opinion, is the second best season of the year only slightly nudged out by that whole holiday season thing. It pretty much means that every Saturday and Sunday I will be attending or glued to my couch watching games all day. This year, I’ve joined not one, but TWO fantasy football leagues. I’m hoping to avenge my abysmal 2-11 record from last year.

I swear, I’m not a boy. I just like sports.

3) I don’t drink coffee all that often, and when I do I usually get a caffeine rush that gets my heart beating faster than the time I went skydiving. But I saw Wednesday’s Livingsocial deal for Starbucks and I couldn’t pass it up. Apparently pumpkin spice lattes are back for fall along with…salted caramel mochas? To my dear co-workers, I’m sorry in advance for I cannot be controlled with caffeine in my system.

4) I’ve realized recently that I’m so apathetic when it comes to politics. Like, I will inform myself enough to make an intelligent, educated voting decision come November, but all this extra bullshit? Not interested. My politically charged friends get so riled up about [it seems like] everything and I sort of wish that I could block anything on facebook that has to deal with politics from now until election day. Maybe it’s just me, but I seriously don’t care about your opinion on everything from birth control to which flavor of gum is best.

Why can’t we all just get along?

5) It was a short week and I loved it. On Tuesday I tweeted something about it being Monday. I promptly deleted it 3 hours later when I realized it was not actually Monday. Now, it feels like Thursday, but is actually Friday. Does it get better than that? I guess it does since I’m going back to my alma matar tomorrow for a football game. Bring on the weekend!!

Have you ever fainted? Do you like football? Do you care about politics?

USA vs Brazil + Myrtle Beach

Guess who just got back from a 4 day weekend? If you guessed me, then congratulations, you’re a winner! I took a bit of a technology hiatus this weekend while I was kickin’ it at Myrtle Beach and it was SO nice. I might have to do that more often, it was a much needed break!

But first, let’s rewind back to Wednesday for the USA vs Brazil soccer match. A few months ago I found a deal on Livingsocial for 50% off Club Level tickets. The deal was just too good to pass up, so I bought them! The only downfall was that game day was on a Wednesday night. Luckily, we crept our way around rush hour traffic somehow and ended up at FedEx field with enough time to have a solid tailgate.

My only complaint was that it didn’t last longer! 2 hours flew by and before we knew it, it was time to go in.

Livingsocial seriously hooked us up with these seats. The Club Level was a lot nicer/less crowded than other areas of the venue. The bathrooms were cleaner, there were lounge areas where you could sit in the air conditioning and watch the game (if you needed to), and you could see the whole field from our view without being too far into the nosebleeds. The game itself was not anything to write home about. The only shining moment came with the lone USA goal to make it a 2-1 game, but in the end Brazil ended up blowing us out of the water: 4-1. Oh well, the outcome was expected. It was still a fun event for a Wednesday night!

The next morning I woke up bright and early to prepare for a full day of driving down to Myrtle Beach. Luckily, I really only had to drive 2 hours by myself to Richmond where I met up with Jim. He drove the remainder of the way. I like being the passenger on long road trips!

Apparently when boredom strikes, my swag comes out in full force.

We stayed at the Schooner II Beach & Racquet Club in Myrtle Beach, which honestly, I would recommend to anyone looking for a place. The rooms were huuuuuuge. We got a one bedroom condo, but could have easily slept 6 since there were a pull out couch AND some rando bunk beds. Plus there was a full kitchen and a sweet balcony that overlooked the ocean.

Balcony View

Aside from Jim’s epic sunburn (which he forbid me to photograph, LAME), the trip was a relaxation success. One of the best parts about going on vacation is, of course, the free license to essentially eat whatever the hell you want. The first night we had pizza from Mellow Mushroom, which I had never been to (but upon further research, I’ve learned that there is one located in DC! Definitely going to have to hit that up soon) but is apparently pretty popular.

This was so good, but I could only eat half. I saved the rest for lunch leftovers for the rest of the week. YUM!

Unfortunately, due to my inadvertent technological hiatus, this was the only food snap shot I took all weekend. Bad, bad blogger! I know. However, other notable eats of the weekend included:

  • Crab dip from Joe’s Crab Shack
  • Coconut Crusted Shrimp also from Joe’s
  • Peanut Butter Cup ice cream from Kirk’s 1890 Ice Cream Parlor (good ice cream, but the place smelled funky)
  • Really good Caesar Salad from Carolina Roadhouse (it came with a¬†croissant drizzled in honey? on the side, whoever thought of that deserves a high five)
  • Marinated Sirloin also from Carolina Roadhouse (marinated in fruit juices, soy sauce, garlic, and spices. You could really taste the fruit juices!!)
  • The best margarita EVER also from Carolina Roadhouse (can you tell I really liked this meal?)

For the record, besides the ice cream and margarita, I wouldn’t have touched these foods with a 10 foot pole before about 2 years ago. It was a pretty adventurous weekend!

To make up for my lack of foodie pictures. Here are some awesome ones of the beach!

So fun.

Anyway, now it’s Monday and that means it’s back to reality. I went for my first run in about 2 weeks today…yikes! It didn’t go so well, but I got to test out my new Garmin watch. So far, so good. It’s slightly confusing to figure out what all the buttons on the bezel do, but I think that’s because I haven’t read the manual yet. I’ll get to it. It’s time to start marathon training again. Also time to resume my diet. Someone has to fit into a bridesmaid’s dress in a few weeks. EEK!

What’s your favorite part about vacation? Food? Relaxing? Sightseeing? Something else?

Things I’m Digging: May Edition

May is one of those perfect months. The April showers are over and it’s so, so close to summer! Although, lately around here, it feels like summer has already arrived.

Here is what I’m diggin’ this month:

Livingsocial Deals

I’ve been looking into buying tickets for this USA vs Brazil game (that is basically being played in my backyard) for months. I had sort of ruled out going/forgot about it, until I saw this little bugger in my inbox. It reignited my desire to go, so I bit the bullet and bought some tickets. I’m SUPERRRRR excited and glad I bought them. I heard that both USA and Brazil are playing their A-teams, so it should be an excellent match. Hopefully we don’t get blown out of the water. Either way, it’ll still be fun to watch!

Weight Lifting

OMFG. I cannot get enough. No, but really, I’m obsessed with weight lifting…again. Is it weird that I actually look forward to coming home and going to my crappy, little apartment gym to pump some iron? Yes? Oh well! I love the way it makes me feel. I’ve noticed some small changes lately, for example: carrying my computer bag into my house with one hand is much easier; I carried a case of 24 full beer bottles without struggle; and I generally have much more energy. I’ve also started to notice some muscle definition in my arms and legs. Added bonus!

Mad Men

This show. So good. Can’t stop watching. I just finished Season 2 and I am hooked! At first, it really bothered me how slow the story lines moved. Now, after watching a few seasons, I appreciate the depth and attention to detail that goes into every scene. The slowness of the show makes it all that much more believable. No one has epiphanies overnight, typically people change gradually over time. The writing is spectacular and the acting is great too. I love how it¬†simultaneously pays homage to, and pokes fun at, certain old-fashioned beliefs…so clever.

The Beach

Because it’s almost summer and I need a tan, duh.

Spending Time with Friends

My bestest friend in the whole wide world is leaving me. Sarah is moving all the way across the country to San Francisco at the end of this month. While I am eternally sad (I mean, seriously, what am I going to do without my partner in crime?), I am thoroughly enjoying all the time we get to spend together while she is still in DC. Music festivals, movies, food, Disney movie + fondue night! Man, I’m going to miss her. DON’T GO SARAH!

What are you diggin’?
