You Sneaky Half-Marathon!

The title of this post is a play on this Jimmy Kimmel video:

Observe the kids at 2:45, sassiest children EVER!

Anyway, I looked at the calendar today and was shocked that there are only two days left in August. September, you snuck up on me! With all my MCM Marathon training, it totally slipped my mind that I signed up for a Labor Day half marathon. Oops!

It’s a good thing they sent me this confirmation e-mail because it definitely had slid under my radar. I haven’t been in much of a running mood this week. I blew off yesterday’s morning run because it was raining, but I made up for it today. I’m hoping that Thursday and Friday’s runs will launch me into race mode. It really is a mindset, huh?

With that said, I have to admit that I’m not all that worried about this race. I’m probably in better shape now than I was for my last half where I PRed. However, I’m not trying to break any records this time around. My goal is to run the whole thing at my marathon race pace (between 8-9 min/miles), we’ll see how that goes. Rock ‘n Roll races are notorious for being super overcrowded, and I can tell you from experience: that’s true. This year will be my third time running this particular race:

2008 – my first half marathon (1:58:17)

2010 – 2:00:12

2012 (I guess I only run this race on even numbered years, weird?)

Errr…there’s no photo for 2012 yet, so I put up a picture of the first thing that came to mind.

SPEAKING OF *NSYNC, my middle-school BFF (who was equally as obsessed as I was) had a dream come true when she met Joseph A. Fatone last week. Don’t know who that is? You need to brush up on your 90’s boy band trivia, brah. It’s Joey from *NSYNC. Like a true friend, she texted me minute-by-minute live updates.

My inner 13 year old wept tears of elation when I saw this picture of them. Oh, and that CD in her hand? Euro *NSYNC circa 1997. No one is as hardcore as we are. No one.

But in all seriousness, if she meets JT next, I’m demanding that she hold him hostage until I can hop a plane to Seattle. Then we can meet, he can fall in love with me (obvs), divorce that gross Jessica Biel, and we can have copious blue-eye, brown-haired babies.

…WHAT? It could happen.

Have you ever met a celebrity? Who?

DC Weekend [In Pictures]

My friend Kristina came to visit from Seattle this past weekend. And boy, were we busy! I had a great time getting to play tourist in my own city and even hit up some monuments I’ve never been to!

I’m not even going to attempt to write a blog post about it because it would be super lengthy and would basically just be about food, drinks, and soccer. So instead, I will show you what we did in photo form!

SO much fun!  I love out of town visitors.

Have you ever played tourist in your own hometown? What fun things did you discover?

Mid-Week Musings and a West Coast Visitor

Longest title ever, am I right?

Anyway, I woke up this morning and without even opening my eyes, I dressed for work. Satisfied with the outfit I was wearing, I looked in the mirror before leaving and realized I look like a TOTAL hipster. I’m starting to realize that in all my jest about hipsters, I might be actually turning into one myself. Shit. Someone hand me a guitar, right meow.

Don’t worry, I added a special hipster-esque filter to give it the full effect. Also, do you know how freaking hard it is to get a full body picture when you’re 5’8″ and have T-Rex arms? Not an easy task, my friends. Not an easy task!

Today is Thursday! That means that my best friend from Washington (State) is flying in today! Kristina and I have known each other since our middle school days back when I lived out on the West Coast. We bonded over a shared love of all things *NSYNC, soccer, and ice cream…but mostly just the *NSYNC thing.

We’ve been able to stay in touch over the past 10 (holy cow!) years and still get to see each other on occasion, for instance when I have a 7 hour layover in Seattle on my way to Hawaii! This will be Kristina’s first time visiting me in DC and I plan to show her all the sights! And by the sights, I mean, we’re going to nom on some burgers from Good Stuff Eatery, eat FroYo, and drink lots of margaritas. Sensing a theme here?

If we find time, we’re also going to hit up a DC United game. Why? 1) We both love soccer! and 2) they’re playing the Seattle Sounders!!! Kristina is a die-hard Sounders fan and I used to go to games before they were even an MLS team. I even bought this sweet jersey for the special occasion:

Random factoid about me: Although I’ve lived on the east coast most of my life, almost all of my sports team loyalties (except Penn State) lie on the west coast. Go Sounders! Go Seahawks! Go Mariners!

Do you have any weird sports-team loyalties?

Guilty Pleasures

We all have them. Those embarrassing things that you watch, listen to, and do behind closed doors at the risk of others barging in on you at any moment and the gig being up. Mortifying. Now, I’m pretty open about most aspects of my life, but even I have some guilty pleasures that I try to keep under wraps…for the most part.

I can already feel myself getting red in the face. Here we go.

Guilty Pleasure Music: *NSYNC

If you knew me before the year 2002, you knew this girl:

And to some degree, she still exists. My love for *NSYNC is like a river…peaceful and deep (and if you get that reference, HIGH TEN!). Back in my middle school days, I was obsessed. This band consumed my life. I spent hours on the internet looking at websites, bought every piece of memorabilia I could get my hands on, saw them 4 times in concert, and listened to their albums so many times that I actually wore one of them out. I can’t make this stuff up. Even now, if I’m having a rough day, I know I can turn on an *NSYNC album and Justin, Chris, Joey, Lance, and JC will cheer me right up…it’s just now, I don’t let people see!

Guilty Pleasure Food: Bacon

Okay, so maybe this isn’t a surprise to anyone. But seriously, I love bacon. And sometimes I hide how much bacon I truly, actually eat from people. It’s almost an embarrassing amount. Think about this: I could eat bacon for breakfast, and then have a BLT for lunch, and then have a bacon cheeseburger for dinner and not even flinch. Not saying that’s ever happened…or has it?

Guilty Pleasure Movie: High School Musical (1, 2, AND 3)

Once again, I seriously wish I was making this stuff up, but I’m not. I love, love, love all three High School Musical movies. I think I have seen them all a minimum 20 of times. It’s even lamer that I think HSM 3 is the best of the series and saw it in theaters twice. I own all of them on DVD, but my go-to is HSM 3. I watch it whenever I’m just having a bum day and need something upbeat to lift my spirits. WILDCATS! Get your head in the game!

Guilty Pleasure YouTube Video: Nom Nom Cat

Seriously, it’s a kitten literally nomming on some food. I can’t get enough.

Most Random Guilty Pleasure: Extremely long showers

I fully acknowledge that I may be the worst human being on the face of the planet to share a bathroom with. I LOVE long, super hot showers. I’m talking about showers that can be upwards to 40 minutes or more. After a shower that long, I come out feeling so clean and refreshed. Not that I always have time to take showers like this, but when I do I take advantage of the situation. And then I usually find myself telling my roommates, “No, I wasn’t just in the shower for 45 minutes. It was 20…tops.” Lies, lies, lies!

What are your guilty pleasures?

PS. First challenge weigh-in coming this weekend. Stay tuned!
